Wing Chun Butterfly Swords: Tango Tanto (First Made) (Collector Grade)
Modell Design LLC has come up with another crazy but functional design. This one is an oversized American tanto that has been heavily curved and features a single near full-blade hollow grind.
This particular Tango Tanto prototype has an ergonomic handle with a taller vertical profile (width as opposed to handle thickness) at the index and pinky finger points than on antique butterfly swords. A number of our clients prefer this for greater comfort and feel it makes retention easier during heavy impacts. The rear of the handle slants down to deal with the bifurcated nature of the fatty areas of the palms. On a perfectly horizontal handle the rear of palm pushes down on the rear of the handle, forcing the tip up and/or additional strain on the wrist to pressure the blade back to horizontal.
The side profile for the Tango Tanto BJD blade was inspired by the work of world-famous knife-maker Jerry Hossom, who deserves the credit and kudos. The designer saw the concept of making an American tanto-style blade without a Nightmare-Grind in use first by Jay Fisher, although none of his blade profiles are in the same genre as that of Jerry Hossom, and then by Mr. Hossom. We do not know who used it first between the two and others. Mr. Hossom's blades, as a general matter, are razor thin (based on his custom of grinding in the opposite, more difficult direction of ordinary knife making so as to take of more steel), whereas these sword blades needed to be thicker due to the heavier intended use.
