Point of Balance: 2.5 inches (6.35 cm) from base of blade.
Notes: These swords are hand-made. No two swords are perfectly identical. Small variations in the measurements are typical. Please read #2 under "Things you should know" and "Not Product Defects" under the warranty for more information.
Case/Sheath: A free sheath will be provided for these swords. Sheaths are offered as free gifts and are given to you "as-is". Blades that are sharp come with a leather sheath that have a nylon interior. Blunt blades come with a nylon sheath. One should not store swords in leather sheaths long term because the chemicals in leather can corrode/tarnish metal. IMPORTANT: Some of the leather sheathes have a metal rivet on the inside that can scratch the blades. The sheath maker considers the exposed shiny rivet head normal construction. We don't. The fix is to put a piece of Gorilla Tape over the rivet - please do this.
General Product Information, From Sifu Tim Lee:
Why
I have been doing Wing Chun for over 17 years and have been a sword collector as well, though not as long. My first pair of Bat Jaun Dao were actually Hung Gar style swords made of aluminum, and were too long to be true Wing Chun Bat Jaun Dao. However, these styles of Bat Jaun Dao are often associated with Wing Chum, but they are not true Wing Chun daos.
My desire to design my own Wing Chun Bat Jaun Dao was based upon a few factors like being as authentic to original Wing Chun daos, while retaining the weight and material of real swords with the use of the best modern day materials at a reasonable cost. This is why I designed these swords under the Everything Wing Chun, custom sword design program, which I found to be the most economical way to achieve my goals.
Design
These swords are a modern day interpretation of authentic antique Hudiedao estimated to be at least 150 years old, and retain some of the details of the originals like the blood groove, sharper tip and raised "D" guard accents, while incorporating modern day advances like the finest German D2 steel, full tang and laminated wood handles.
They are a hybrid design, because the Wing Chun Bat Jaun dao form I learned utilizes mainly chopping and slicing movements, with no flipping and only a few stabbing movements. As such I kept the basic original stabbing design, but widened the width of the blade to allow for better chopping without going super wide on the end as many chopping style daos are, which to me seem top heavy. I think my design allows for a point-of-balance that makes it easier to quickly maneuver or flip these dao in close quarters than the traditional wide choppers.
If anyone has seen the Shaw Brothers movie "The 36th Chamber of Shaolin" aka "Master Killer", they may remember the fight scene of a Shaolin monk proficiently using Hudiedao against Gordon Liu's San Te role. These fight sequences weighed heavily in my mind in making my design more suitable for flipping, as I believe these swords are.
Materials
The choice of a full tang blade made of German D2 steel was a no brainer after seeing many a blade ruined in sword vs. sword and sword vs. pole demonstration. I believe in using combat ready weapons in authentic weights for practice, and the materials for this modern day Bat Jaun Dao retain the look and feel of authentic fighting swords, while being suitable for every day practice or weapon vs. weapon, though these swords are so nice you may not want to scratch the blades. These are NOT your run of the mill Wu Shu type swords made with flimsy aluminum or spring steel!
I chose the toughest steel and wood that is less likely to be affected by the weather or water, but one should still take care of his swords. I own both sharpen and unsharpened versions of these swords and actually use them, which is why my name is stamped on the blade.
Anyone working for or affiliated in any way with Everything Wing Chun, the designer(s), builder or I are not responsible for any injury, damage or loss of life as a result of using or misusing these swords. Please take care during their use, because even the unsharpened ones are real weapons!
